Events Here are details of the events and activities planned for the Olympiad thus far: The Challenger Learning Centre: During the course of the Olympiad, every participant (student and leader) will have the opportunity to use the new Challenger Learning Centre. Challenger Learning Centres (CLCs) provide exciting educational programmes based on simulating the experience of astronauts and ground control operators. In a typical space mission, children assume the role of scientists and engineers who encounter problems of navigation, ecology, robotics, chemistry, physics, and more. The CLC at Leicester is the only one of its kind outside of North America. A day at a theme park: All student participants of the Olympiad will be spending a day at Alton Towers, Britain's most famous theme park. Alton Towers offers a great day out for everyone; whether you are a fan of losing your wits on the thrill rides or just enjoy the arcades, shows, food and atmosphere! Other day trips: The student delegates will be able to spend a day at either Oxford or Cambridge: At Oxford, the visitors will be taken on a tour of the city, Colleges and The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, one of Britain's major Physics research institutions. Lunch will be taken at one of the Colleges. At Cambridge, the tour will include Newton's birthplace and the Cavendish Laboratory, as well as a tour of the city and Colleges. Lunch will be taken at one of the Colleges. There may also be optional trips organised for the students on Friday afternoon. The leaders will be taken on two day trips, to Greenwich and to Oxford: On the Greenwich trip, the leaders will be taken by coach to Greenwich, where there will be opportunities to visit the Observatory and Museum, the National Maritime Museum and the National Physical Laboratory. After their visit the leaders will take a boat trip up the Thames to Westminster Pier in London and an early supper at the Houses of Parliament, hosted by Leicester MPs (Members of Parliament). At Oxford, the leaders will arrive in time for lunch at one of the colleges, followed by a conducted tour of Oxford and the colleges. It is likely that there will be free time at the end to explore Oxford individually. Cannons Leisure Centre: Cannons Leisure Centre, located next to the University, have agreed to allow the use of the Centre by Olympiad participants between 9am. and 5pm., for the duration of the Olympiad. The use will be somewhat limited and the details of these arrangements are still being sorted out. Watch this space for more information. And to keep everyone occupied in the evenings, there will be a lecture and demonstration entitled "Explosives and Explosions", a disco, a student concert and a barbecue/Indian evening.
