WELCOME
This year 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of space research at the University of Leicester, set up in 1960 with an initial grant of £13,006 to study ‘Solar and Stellar X-ray emissions’.
To mark this occasion we held a three-day science symposium (July 6-8 2010) which was attended by over 150 delegates, a mixture of former and current
Leicester colleagues, together with many other scientists from round the world with close
associations with Leicester over the preceding decades. Attendees included colleagues from the UK (of course), Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.
Each day focused on a science theme linked to the long-standing research interests of the Leicester Group and included talks ranging from topical reviews to new project presentations. Also included were talks which highlighted key issues for the future or
took the opportunity to look back with some historical retrospectives.
In parallel with the Symposium, the third day of the meeting included a Reunion Event, an informal occasion providing the opportunity for former colleagues no longer working directly in the space research area to meet up, catch up and find out what has been
happening at Leicester in recent years.

THANKS
Thanks to all who attended the Symposium or the Reunion for making both events so successful and of course for helping us celebrate our 50th Anniversary in style.
