Active Galaxy

Active galaxies are the most powerful objects in the Universe - they are often as bright as a million million suns. It is generally accepted that active galaxies are primarily powered by material which falls onto a central, supermassive black hole. This image shows a "cut-away" diagram of what we now think the central engine of such a galaxy looks like; the red is the in-falling matter and the blue is a jet thrown out by the black hole, which is in the centre. For more information on active galaxies, see our AGN and QSOs page.
