  Research & Postgraduate Opportunities

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester has an internationally recognised and well funded research programme, with well over 100 academic and post doctoral staff and research students currently engaged in research. The Department is taking a leading role in several major projects involving collaborations with other institutions in the UK and abroad. Excellent technical and computing facilities are available and there is an organised teaching programme and regular seminar series. Research grants per academic staff are, according to the Universities Funding Council statistics, amongst the top three of all physics departments.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has been awarded one of the highest ratings in the last national research assessment (grade 5), and in 1994 was awarded the prestigious Queen's Award for Higher and Further Education.

Details of current research projects offered by the X-ray Astronomy Group and the Astronomy Group are shown below. All of these projects offer an opportunity to undertake research training leading to the degree of PhD.
